A Wolf in Another Wolf’s Clothing: Post-Genomic Regulation Dictates Venom Profiles of Medically-Important Cryptic Kraits in India

چکیده

The Common Krait (Bungarus caeruleus) shares a distribution range with many other ‘phenotypically-similar’ kraits across the Indian subcontinent. Despite several reports of fatal envenomings by Bungarus species, commercial antivenoms are only manufactured against B. caeruleus. It is, therefore, imperative to understand genetically distinct lineages kraits, compositional differences in their venoms, and consequent impact venom variation on (pre)clinical effectiveness antivenom therapy. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted phylogenetic comparative venomics investigations Southern Western India. Phylogenetic reconstructions using mitochondrial markers revealed new species krait, Romulus’ krait romulusi sp. nov.), Additionally, found that 17 mid-body dorsal scale rows India do not represent subspecies Sind (B. sindanus walli) as previously believed, but very similar Pakistan. Furthermore, proteomics transcriptomics completely contrasting profiles. While gland transcriptomes all three were highly similar, proteomes toxicity profiles differed significantly, suggesting prominent role post-genomic regulatory mechanisms shaping venoms these cryptic kraits. In vitro recognition vivo neutralisation experiments strong negative variability preclinical performance antivenoms. caeruleus was neutralised per manufacturer’s claim, poor, highlighting need for regionally-effective

This case of infective endocarditis masquerading as mixed cryoglobulinemia in a man with a history of intravenous drug use (IVDU) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) highlights the importance of maintaining a broad differential and continually re-evaluating the working diagnosis as new information presents itself. The patient presented to an outside hospital and was treated for presumptive mixed cryogl...

Bradykinin-Potentiating Factors of Venom from Iranian Medically Important Scorpions

The venom of animals, including snakes, scorpions, and spiders is a complex combination of proteins, peptides, and other biomolecules as well as some minerals. Among the biomolecules of some animal’s venom, small peptides that lack disulfide bands known as Non-Disulfide Bridge Peptides (NDBPs) potentiate the bradykinin by preventing the conversion of angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 using the mec...

Curriculum regulation in Scotland: A wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf

Following political devolution in 1999, Scotland’s already distinctive education system has diverged further from the rest of the United Kingdom. A major trend has been a weakening of input regulation of the school curriculum. Scotland’s recently developed Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) has been predicated upon notions of curricular flexibility, local autonomy and school-based curriculum devel...

Carcinoid tumours are often difficult to diagnose because of non-specific symptoms, mimicking those of irritable bowel disease of Crohn's disease. The authors describe a 57-year-old patient with clinical and radiological features, suggestive of Crohn's disease, in whom the diagnosis was proved to be a carcinoid tumour involving the terminal ileum. This case report illustrates that ileal carcino...
